The characteristically black assemblage is an industrially fabricated steel work; it is one of Nevelson's larger creations and among the very best of her late sculptures. The ball of welded railroad spikes (from the early 1970s) that sits on top of the sculpture was added last. Nevelson explained: "sometimes it's only a period that really finishes the sentence and that was the period that finished that sentence."
