Louise Nevelson American, born in Russia, 1900-1988 City on the High Mountain, 1983 Steel painted black 20' 6" x 23' x 13' 6" Diminishing Reflection XXV, 1966 Wood painted black and plexiglass 17 5/8 x 17 1/2 x 6" The characteristically black assemblage is an industrially fabricated steel work; it is one of Nevelson's larger creations and among the very best of her late sculptures. The ball of welded railroad spikes (from the early 1970s) that sits on top of the sculpture was added last. Nevelson explained: "sometimes it's only a period that really finishes the sentence and that was the period that finished that sentence." |
