On Exhibit
May 21 - November 15, 2001
April 1 - November 15, 2002
April 1 - November 15, 2003

This exhibition focused on the dramatic late works of one of the modern era's greatest sculptors. Calder (1898-1976) began in 1936 to develop ideas and methods for creating monumental sculptures to be sited outdoors; after World War II, he at last had the opportunity to realize such grand-scale projects, which became a primary focus of his art for his last two decades.

The largest group of these works ever assembled-18 in all, many of them unseen in public for years or never previously exhibited-will rise on the lawn and fields of Storm King for Grand Intuitions. Inside the museum building, an installation of another half-dozen historically significant sculptures, as well as more than two dozen maquettes-the preparatory models-give visitors an insight into Calder's process of making large-scale works. Also on view in the museum building are photo panels showing Calder's studio, historic gallery installations, and on-site views of major public sculptures.

The works on loan for Grand Intuitions: Calder's Monumental Sculpture are courtesy of the Calder Foundation, New York. Alexander S.C. Rower, a grandson of Alexander Calder and Director of the Calder Foundation, is the guest curator for the exhibition, with David R. Collens, Director and Chief Curator of Storm King Art Center.
